Import Bank Statements in Moneybird
Guide for importing MT940 and CAMT.053 bank statements in Moneybird.
Importing bank statements in Moneybird
Moneybird is a popular accounting package for freelancers and small businesses in the Netherlands. It supports importing bank statements in MT940 and CAMT.053 format. In this article, we explain how to import bank statements in Moneybird and how to convert files that are not in the right format.
Supported formats in Moneybird
- MT940 (SWIFT): Official MT940 files from Dutch banks. Note: self-created MT940 files are often not accepted by Moneybird.
- CAMT.053 (ISO 20022): Fully supported. Recommended for foreign banks and as a future-proof alternative to MT940.
- CSV: Not supported for bank transactions. Convert CSV to MT940 via StatementBridge.
- Bank connection: Automatic synchronisation available for most Dutch banks.
Tip: It doesn't matter to Moneybird whether you use MT940 or CAMT.053 — both files result in the same data in Moneybird. However, always use the same file type to avoid duplicate transactions.
Import bank statement in Moneybird
- Log in to Moneybird.
- Go to the Bank tab.
- Click the Add button at the top of the page.
- Upload your MT940 or CAMT.053 file.
- Moneybird processes the transactions automatically.
Tip: If the file is for an account that doesn't exist yet in your administration, Moneybird automatically creates the account for you.
Accidentally imported too many transactions?
If you accidentally added too many transactions, click the dot before the date of one of the transactions to open the statement. At the top of the statement, you can indicate that you want to delete all transactions before a certain date.
Convert CSV or Excel for Moneybird
Moneybird does not accept CSV or Excel for bank transactions. If you have transaction data in CSV or Excel (e.g. from a credit card company or foreign bank), convert it to MT940 first:
- Upload your CSV or Excel file in StatementBridge.
- Map the columns (date, amount, description).
- Enter the IBAN of the account.
- Export as MT940 and import the result in Moneybird.
Important: Moneybird only accepts MT940 files that exactly follow the bank format. StatementBridge generates files that meet this requirement.
Common problems and solutions
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| “File not recognised” | The file is not an official MT940/CAMT.053 | Convert with StatementBridge to a valid format |
| “Bank account not found” | The IBAN is unknown in Moneybird | Moneybird creates the account automatically, or add it manually |
| Duplicate transactions | Overlapping periods imported | Always use the same file type and avoid overlapping dates |
