How to Import Bank Statements in AFAS
Step-by-step guide for importing MT940 and CAMT.053 bank statements in AFAS Software.
Importing bank statements in AFAS
AFAS Software is one of the larger ERP and accounting packages in the Netherlands, widely used by medium-sized businesses and accounting firms. AFAS supports importing bank statements in MT940 format and the newer CAMT.053 standard. In this article we explain how to import bank statements in AFAS, which formats are supported and how to solve common problems.
Supported formats in AFAS
- CAMT.053 (ISO 20022): The newer XML format that Dutch banks are migrating to. Also known as TAG25 in AFAS.
- MT940 (SWIFT): The standard bank statement format. AFAS processes MT940 files from all major Dutch banks. This format is gradually being replaced by CAMT.053.
- CODA: The Belgian bank statement format, only available for Belgian account numbers.
- Bank connection: Direct bank connections for ABN AMRO, Rabobank, ING and Knab.
Importing MT940 in AFAS
- Navigate to Financial > Post > Bank statement in the AFAS menu.
- Click New.
- Select SWIFT (MT-940) as the file format.
- Select your MT940 file.
- AFAS automatically recognises the account number and transactions.
- Review the transactions and click Process.
Note: The account number in the MT940 file must match a bank account already configured in your AFAS administration. Set up bank statements via Financial > Management > Administration settings (Bank statements tab).
Converting CSV or Excel for AFAS
AFAS does not accept CSV files directly for bank transactions. The solution is to convert your CSV or Excel file to MT940:
- Upload your CSV or Excel file in StatementBridge.
- Map the columns (date, amount, description) to the correct fields.
- Enter the bank account IBAN.
- Export as MT940 and import the file in AFAS.
Common problems and solutions
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| "Bank account not found" | The IBAN in the file does not match an account in AFAS | Create the bank account in AFAS with the correct IBAN |
| "Invalid file format" | The file is not in MT940 or CAMT.053 format | Convert the file to MT940 with StatementBridge |
| Duplicate transactions | The same statement was already imported | Check the statement number; AFAS usually warns about duplicates |
| CAMT.053 not recognised | Version incompatibility | Convert to MT940 with StatementBridge or update AFAS |
