Stripe to MT940 in 3 steps

  1. Export the payout reconciliation. From the Stripe Dashboard, as CSV. It carries gross amount, fee withheld and net amount per payout — everything needed to book revenue correctly.
  2. Generate an account number. Stripe has no IBAN. A valid fictitious account number is generated for the Stripe suspense account, so your package accepts the file.
  3. Download the MT940 file. Refunds and chargebacks stay separate entries rather than being netted against revenue, so they remain traceable.

Booking Stripe correctly

Gross on a suspense account

Book the gross amount to a Stripe suspense account and the fee as a cost. The payout then clears the suspense account against the bank.

The fee is a cost, not a discount

Netting the fee against revenue understates turnover — which matters for VAT and for any revenue-based reporting.

Refunds and chargebacks

Both appear as negative lines in the payout report and become individual entries, so you can trace them.

CAMT.053 instead

From the same upload you can pick CAMT.053. It carries more structured information than MT940 does.

Frequently asked questions

Which Stripe file should I export?

The payout reconciliation from the Stripe Dashboard, as CSV. It lists gross amount, the fee withheld and the net amount per payout — exactly what you need to book revenue correctly.

Why is my revenue wrong if I just book the payout?

Because Stripe pays out net. If you only book what lands in the bank account, you miss the fee and your turnover is understated. Book gross to a suspense account and the fee as a cost.

Stripe has no IBAN. What do I use?

A fictitious but valid account number is generated for the Stripe suspense account. It passes the IBAN check accounting packages apply and will not collide with an existing bank account.

How are refunds and chargebacks handled?

They appear as separate negative lines in the payout report and end up as individual entries in the MT940, so they stay traceable in your books rather than being netted against revenue.

Can I get CAMT.053 instead of MT940?

Yes. From the same upload you can pick CAMT.053, Excel or CSV. If your package works with CAMT.053, prefer it — it carries more structured information than MT940.
